SalvaNATURA was created in 1989 by a group of professionals in the Club Activo 20-30 San Salvador, interested in promoting sustainable development in El Salvador.

Its founders’ purpose was to effectively contribute to the conservation of the environment and natural resources through a private, apolitical and non-profit organization with institutional autonomy.

On September 6th, 1989, the Fundación Ecológica Salvadoreña Eco Activo 20-30 was legally created, during the swearing in of the members of the first Board of Directors, who gave their words to stop the progression of environmental deterioration and manage funds to invest in conservation projects for the following decade, the nineties.

“El Salvador is experiencing a natural drama, threatened by ecological disaster, in the context of a general crisis that will worsen, if control measures aren’t taken immediately”, said our first President, Dr. David Escobar Galindo.

In 1992, the Board of Directors decided to change the name of the foundation to SalvaNATURA, a word game that for the members meant saving El Salvador’s nature (“Salva”, which literally means “save”; and “Natura”, which is short for nature – “Naturaleza”, in Spanish –).

Strategic Objectives:

  • Creating environmental awareness.
  • Being financially sustainable (to develop preservation and human development projects).
  • Preserving protected natural areas, biodiversity and environmental services to communities.
  • Improving the quality of life of the population.
